The Buttermore project was a rare opportunity to blend modern design with environmental preservation. JB and Rosemary Buttermore sought a custom outdoor space that harmonized with their home’s sleek, contemporary lines while ensuring the survival of a massive, historic cottonwood tree near the seawall. To bring this vision to life, I collaborated with my close friend and skilled designer, Steve, to develop the conceptual framework.
To achieve this, we meticulously designed the patio layout using 3’ x 3’ x 2” thick natural cleft Bluestone in thermal blue, carefully integrating 2’ x 2’ stones to accommodate the tree’s root system. A 16-inch grade difference between the seawall and patio was solved with expertly placed stone curbing and two 3,000-pound sitting stones—serving both as functional seating and sculptural elements. This project exemplifies how thoughtful landscape design can protect natural elements while enhancing an outdoor space with timeless beauty.
We were very pleased with the lakeside patio project completed by Mike’s team. He brought a unique and creative design via his landscape architect . Our big tree and patio design had to be worked around and the result was executed perfectly. He took good care with our driveway and lawn during the process. He did exactly what he said he would do and was easy to work with as “normal” project related challenges bubbled up. Overall we are very happy with the project and would highly recommend using the “Naturalist” for any projects
