Bringing the Outdoors In

A Nature-Inspired Fireplace Transformation

Nestled in the serene woods of Milford, Michigan, this organic-style fireplace seamlessly brings the beauty of the surrounding landscape into the sunroom. Homeowner Mary was eager to update her 1970s brick fireplace, envisioning a design that would capture both the natural elements outside and her deep appreciation for Mother Nature.

When Mary visited my shop, she was immediately drawn to a blackened piece of Eastern Red Cedar, a striking material treated using the traditional Japanese technique of shou sugi ban. This method, which involves burning the wood to seal it, enhances its durability by making it resistant to water, fire, and insects while also enriching its natural texture and character. Seeing her enthusiasm for organic materials, I introduced her to a selection of character stones and a unique Green/Lilac picture stone, both of which complemented her vision. She was captivated by the idea of incorporating a picture stone and ultimately selected a mosaic full-color veneer to complete the look.

Mary also wanted to incorporate animal tiles into the design, and I knew just the right artist to bring this detail to life. I directed her to the David Ellison Galleries in St. Clair Shores, where she carefully selected a few small animal tiles to personalize the piece.

This fireplace is a true showcase of craftsmanship and natural beauty, incorporating a variety of Bluestone elements. It features a chamfered-edge 1 ½” natural cleft hearth, Green/Brown natural legs, a rock-faced lintel, a mosaic full-color veneer, and a stunning Green/Lilac picture stone. The result is a one-of-a-kind statement piece that blends artistry, nature, and timeless design, creating a warm and inviting focal point within Mary’s home.
